About this event

Audubon Great Lakes is organizing a bird walk and habitat restoration tour at Powderhorn Lake where they have just completed a 3-year, 100-acre restoration of wetlands with Forest Preserves of Cook County and other partners. Powderhorn Lake has been identified as the most biodiverse area within the City of Chicago, and it contains rare habitats like dune and swale and hemimarsh, which attract a wide diversity of secretive marsh bird species like Pied-billed Grebe and Sora and migratory landbirds like warblers and thrushes.

The experts that will be leading the walk include:

  • Daniel Suarez, Senior Conservation Manager, Audubon Great Lakes
  • Stephanie Beilke, Senior Manager, Conservation Science, Audubon Great Lakes
  • Steve Silic, Fisheries Biologist, Forest Preserves of Cook County
  • Troy Showerman, Resource Project Manager, Forest Preserves of Cook County

A great article with more information about the Powderhorn Lake project is online here.

Please bring your own binoculars or a scope if you have them. Some binoculars will be available to borrow. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes as we will be walking along trails with uneven ground. Rain or shine.

A regional office of the National Audubon Society, Audubon Great Lakes manages conservation work throughout the region to protect and improve habitat critical for birds during their migration and nesting cycles, and we build networks of volunteers and advocates for the natural environment. Within the National Audubon Society’s network, Audubon Great Lakes is viewed as a leader in building networks of community scientists and conservationists that take the lead in advocating for and managing the ecosystems that birds need to thrive.

Chicago Water Week is a community-driven celebration that highlights the amazing work our partners are doing to solve water challenges, grow our region’s blue economy, and drive innovation.
